Mission
Statement
The mission of the
Longview Public Library is to improve the
quality of life for the client and the
community:

By demonstrating professional leadership in
designing, developing, and managing library
collections, systems, and services;

By bringing people and resources together,
closing the gap between the individual and the
record of knowledge and culture;

By providing current information;
-
By cooperating with other libraries,
institutions, and agencies to provide
resources otherwise unavailable;

By offering a broad and diverse range of
resources to entertain and enlighten.
Role
of the Library
In furtherance of the
Library’s mission, the Longview Public
Library strives to fulfill the following roles
for the community it serves:

Longview Public Library shall be a place of
opportunity for all, where reading, exploring,
and learning are encouraged throughout the
individual’s life.

Longview Public Library shall be an
indispensable source of current information,
utilizing the latest technology for retrieval
and delivery.

Longview Public Library shall be a place to
learn and practice new skills for adult
learners.

Longview Public Library shall support family
literacy programs to help parents improve
their reading skills and to help them raise
children who are readers and lifelong
learners.

Longview Public Library shall offer a variety
of programs including preschool story time,
reading clubs, homework assistance, delivery
of books to local homebound patrons, and
Internet and computer training to assist
individuals with their information needs.
At the heart of the
Library’s mission and roles in the community
is the process of collection development. This is the process used to select the materials of interest
to library patrons and to support the
Library’s roles in the community.
It also includes the process for
maintaining the collection through judicial
withdrawal of unneeded items.
