Replacements
While the library attempts to have copies of
all standard and classic works, it cannot
replace each copy withdrawn from the
collection. Further, the library will not
automatically replace items withdrawn because
of loss, damage, or wear. Decisions will
be based on the following criteria:
- Demand for a specific item
- Number of copies held
- Existing coverage of the subject
- Availability of newer or revised materials on the subject
- Authority and importance of the author
- Appearance in standard bibliographies
- Price of the replacement copy
- Whether the
item is the best available work on the subject
- Whether the item is in keeping with the current selection criteria
- Item is still in print
Collection Maintenance
Weeding, or the withdrawal of materials from
the collection, is a necessary part of the
collection development process as it allows for
the systematic withdrawal of worn, dated, or
damaged library materials. Persons
responsible for selection in a particular area
of the collection are responsible for weeding
in that area. The following should be
considered when selecting items for withdrawal:
- Poor physical condition; not suitable for rebinding
- Duplicate copies of a title no longer in demand
- Obsolete content
- No circulation in the last five years
This process helps maintain the quality of
the library collection and is not intended to
sanction removal of library materials based
upon any controversy surrounding the material.
Materials that are removed from the
collection must be discarded in accordance to
city policy regarding the disposal of city
property. Items removed from the
collection that may be of interest or use to
other local libraries may be offered on an
exchange list. All other materials may be
sold in a public book sale, or destroyed.
Binding and Rebinding Policy
Binding and rebinding is reserved for items
expected to be useful in the collection for
longer than two years. In addition, there
must be sufficient space between the binding
and the text or graphics for the rebinding
process. New materials that are only
available in paperback and meet the criteria
for binding may be sent for binding before they
are processed for circulation, based upon
available funds. Items in the collection
whose original binding has been damaged beyond
repair, or whose cover has been damaged, may be
sent to the bindery if they meet the criteria
listed above.
