Under the Quilt of Night
by Deborah Hopkinson
rated by Peyton Baker, age 13
Okay. But you have to give it a chance.
This book is mostly about slaves running
away. Then they try to get them. They run bare
foot, and sleep on the ground. They run in the
hot, cold, dark and in the morning they hide so
that they would not get caught. And they want to
find freedom. And they did find freedom.
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks
rated by Joshua Bynum, age 16
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.
This book is about a young drifter who has
nothing better to do so he joins the army. On
leave he meets the girl of his dreams, they fall
in love and that’s all that I am going to tell
you.
When I read this book it made me think about
what is love, is it a feeling? Is it a choice?
What is true love? What is the meaning of
marriage is it to help one another or to be
served?
The Conjurer's Bird
by Martin Davis
rated by Joshua Bynum, age 16
Good. Most teens will enjoy it.
An interesting novel about a natural science
professor named John Fitzgerald and his search
for the only specimen to ever exist of the
Mysterious Bird of Ulieta. Johann Forster
captured the bird in 1774 on Captain Cook’s
second expedition. When the expedition returned
the specimen was given to Joseph Banks where it
disappeared never to be seen again. Fitz must
try to figure out where the bird might have
gone. Interspersed in the book is the story of
Joseph Bank and who he was.
Warriors
Field Guide by Erin Hunter
rated by Joshua Carl, age 13
Good. Most teens will enjoy it.
This book helps you to understand the
Warriors series much better. It gives the
warrior’s code and many legends surrounding
the origins of the clans. The warrior’s code
is very confusing and had me stumped until I
read this book. The origins of the clans come
from the Lion, Tiger, and Leopard clans.
Excerpts from the books are included as well.
The maps show detailed surroundings for the
Forest and Lake Territories. However, Read The
Books First! Or you will only be confused
further.
Lord Brocktree by Brain Jacques
rated by Joshua Carl, age 13
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.
Lord Brocktree is an epic tail of mass
proportions. Lord Brocktree, a badger, journeys
with his friends to gather a large army of
hares. Ungatt Trunn the wildcat, with his Blue
Hordes, conquers Salamandastron and kills Lord
Brocktree’s father Stonepaw. Brocktree takes
control of his army and joins up with otters,
hedgehogs, and squirrels. With his newfound
army, he travels south to Salamandastron and
battles Ungatt Trunn. Carrying out a daring
plan, he takes control of Salamandastron and
challenges Ungatt Trunn to 1-on-1 combat.
Brocktree kills him and his innumerable Blue
Hordes. 5 stars all the way!
Mossflower by Brian Jacques
rated by Joshua Carl, age 13
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.

an evil wildcat. Martin escapes with the help of

searats in which Boar dies. Martin returns to
Mossflower gathering an army along the way. He

is flooded and Tsarmina dies by Martin’s
sword.
Standing next to history
by Joseph Petro
rated by Joshua Bynum, age 16
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.
I thought it was a very interesting and
informative book about the author and his
twenty-three years in the secret service. Its
full of Secret Service history and little known
protective procedures. He talks about his
experience guarding people like Ronald Reagan,
Dan Quayle, Nelson Rockefeller, Gerald Ford,
Margaret Thatcher, Fidel Castro, Mikhail
Gorbachev and Pope John Paul 2 whose trip Petro
was incharge of on the famous ten day tour of
the United States. It’s a book from an
insider, watching history being made.
Mere Christianity
by C. S. Lewis
rated by Susanna Bynum, age 14
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.
In the book C.S. Lewis presents a case so
immersed in knowledge and passion, even those
who would like to disagree have to take note and
listen. The first book talks about the standard
non Christians have, why they have a standard
and what that implies about the God that made
them. The second and third books disscuss what
Christians believe, Christian morality and what
that shows about Christians. Book four shows a
glimpse into the triunity of God. This is a
deep, profound book, an excellent companion to
those who are interested in Atheism, Theology or
Christianity.
I KIssed Dating
Good-bye by Joshua
Harris
rated by Susanna Bynum, age 14
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.
In I Kissed Dating Good-bye, Joshua Harris
presents the idea of waiting on the dating
game-until we’re ready to end the game. In our
culture “dating” screams physical intimacy
before commitment. In order to stay sexually
pure he says we need to have a whole new dating
mindset. Joshua discuses the fact that so much time is
consumed in dating that when those who played
the game look back on their young adulthood,
they see how little they did outside of shallow
relationships. Read this book and find out why
waiting really is an option!
Love You Forever
by Robert Munsch
rated by Susanna Bynum, age 14
Good. Most teens will enjoy it.
Love you forever is a great children’s book
to read to a younger sibling or a child you
baby-sit. The book is about a boy from the time
he is born to the time he has a child of his
own. The book shows the love of a mother for her
son and how important it is in shaping the way
he loved her (and one day his daughter.) The
book never says the name of the little boy and
you get the feeling that it could be any
boy-maybe your brother. Loved it.
Pilgrims Progress
by John Bunyan
rated by Susanna Bynum, age 14
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.
In the book John Bunyan presents an allegory
about the road of faith everyone chooses. But
beware, for not everyone chooses the right way.
In the book we follow Christian as he enters
through the Wicket gate, braves lions, battles
the fierce Apollyon and finally swims the river
Jordan. This exciting book introduces Christian
to certain people as Worldly Wiseman, who tries
to “enlighten” Christian off the path;
Evangelist, who helps and encourages Christian
on the road; Faith, a friend sent just at the
right time; and finally, you are introduced to
yourself in a way few books can.
Shadow Spinner
by Susan Fletcher
rated by Susanna Bynum, age 14
Great! I would recommend it to all my
friends.
Shadow Spinner is the tale of young
Shaharazad, who saves the life of every Persian
girl by keeping the Sultan (her husband)
interested in her stories. But Shaharazad is
running out of stories and how long can her
stories keep her alive? When Marjan comes to the
palace who is also a gifted story teller as
well, it seems as though Shaharazad may have
hope after all. As the climax of the book
unfolds we see that Shaharazad and Marjan are in
a story of their own much like the stories they
tell every night.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
by J. K. Rowling
rated by Kristin Moseley, age 15
Great. I would recommend it to all my
friends.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
by J.K.Rowling, Harry is attacked by dementors,
accused of using magic illegally and in the
presence of a muggle unreasonably, physically
scarred by new Defense Against the Dark Arts
teacher, dreams of Voldemort's evil doings, and
loses someone very dear to him all within his
fifth year at Hogwarts. Although he comes off
grouchy and seems to be in a foul mood 98% of
the time, everything does end up working out for
the best, although Harry doesn't know it yet.

Okay. But you have to give it a chance.
