Computer Classes

KeyboardAll Computer Classes will be taught in the Computer Lab. Class time will be about two hours with additional time allotted for questions and practice. A list of classes being offered currently can be found on the Library Calendar. To sign up for a specific class, please call (903) 237-1354.  

Microsoft Office 2007 is available in multiple editions. Use this guide to help you see which version you have and help decide if a class we offer is right for you.

Basics Courses

Computer Basics
This course will offer students an opportunity to become more familiar with a computer.  They will learn some of the basic components, will learn to navigate through the Windows environment, and will learn to operate the mouse.  Through hands-on exercises students will explore sample programs.  This class is designed for beginning computer users.  

Internet Basics
This course will offer students a brief introduction to the Internet with particular attention to the World Wide Web.  They will gain a simple understanding of how the Internet is structured and how it functions.  Through hands-on exercises the students will learn about Microsoft's Internet Explorer, hyperlinks, and searching the Internet. Experience with Windows and mouse required.  Beginner class.

Microsoft Word

Word I
This class is designed as an introduction to word processing using Word 2007.  Students will learn the basic tools of Word 2007 and practice selecting text, modifying text, cutting and pasting, opening a file, and saving a document.  Spelling and grammar checks, paragraph options, and alignments buttons will be discussed.  Hands-on exercises will include editing a pre-existing document and creating a party invitation.  This class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse.  Beginner class.

Word II
This class offers students a review of the skills learned in Word I and introduces students to lists, tables, and drawing.  Hands-on exercises include review of cutting, pasting, and formatting text, creating a table and list, and drawing.  This class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse, and has taken the Word I class.  Beginner class.

Word III  
This class offers students advanced practice in inserting columns, borders and footnotes, and adjusting margins.  Hands-on exercise includes creating a newsletter type article with pictures, columns, table, and page border.  This class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse, and has taken the Word I & II classes.  Intermediate class.

Microsoft Excel

Excel I
This class will offer students an opportunity to become familiar with spreadsheets.  They will learn what a spreadsheet is and some common uses for them.  Using hands-on exercises the students will create a simple budget spreadsheet and an electronic checkbook.  This class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse.  Beginner class. 

Excel II
This class will offer students a review of the skills learned in Excel I and introduce them to inserting cells, sorting data, formatting spreadsheets, and entering formulas.  Hands-on exercises will include changes to pre-existing spreadsheets.  This class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse, and has taken the Introduction to Excel class.  Intermediate class.

PowerPoint
This class will provide students with an overview of how to create presentations using Microsoft's PowerPoint.  Students will learn how to create a presentation, change formatting on individual slides, insert clip art, and apply designs, animations, transitions, and effects.  The final product will be a short presentation with handouts.  This class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse.  Intermediate class.

These classes are offered by request only. Please call (903) 237-1354 to place your name on a waiting list. When a significant number have expressed interest, a class will be scheduled. 

Access I & II
Microsoft Access is a database program that easily organizes contacts, employees and other groups of data. With multiple organization options and the ability to link or import information from other databases, the program allows you to search and categorize data into various methods, including forms, reports and tables. The purpose of this class is to introduce participants to the basics of Microsoft Access including creating tables, forms, queries and reports. The class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse. 

Publisher
This class will offer students the opportunity to become familiar with Microsoft's Publisher, a desktop publishing program.  Students will learn the kinds of publications they can make with this program, learn to use the Wizard to create a card, learn to edit text and add text boxes, and learn to add clip art.  The final product will be a greeting card.  The class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse.  Intermediate class.  

QuickBooks I & II
These classes teach the basic functions for small business accounting. Experience with Windows.   Intermediate classes. 

Library Databases
This class will provide students with an overview of the Library's online databases.  Students will learn what databases are available, how to search each database, and how to retrieve search results.  This class assumes the student has some experience with Windows and using a mouse.  Intermediate class.
